ITINERARY

Every Stop a Unique Experience

1st Stop

Maria's wood oven bakery

We will start our excursion by paying a visit to Maria's traditional Wood Oven Bakery. It's a traditional bakery that passes from generation to generation. There, we will have a small demonstration of creating Cretan baked delicacies. After that, we can have a breakfast and taste all the delicious products they bake. And yes... some raki is always in order!

2 nd Stop

The wooden sculpture museum

2nd Stop

The wooden sculpture museum

After that, we will visit Axos village where a resident, Mr. George, makes spectacular huge wooden sculptures by using departed tree pieces from all over the island. What is remarkable here, is that one will be able to see a three-meter sculpture of Hercules killing the lion of Nemea, all this made by one man (with a lot of talent). The artist is inspired by the history and the tradition of our island as well as the mythology of Ancient Greece.

3rd Stop

The art of weaving

As we continue our visit, we will visit a charming old lady, Mrs. Antonia, who lives only fifteen minutes away from the woodcarving museum. First, she welcomes us with raki and traditional cheese pies (kalitsounia). Then she will show us how she spins the sheep's wool, process it and then weave it on her traditional loom. The smiling old lady will teach you the traditional process of embroidery and weaving. She has been using this technique for over 50 years. You will be impressed when you see its dexterity and her outdated but effective tools. Our beloved “grandmother” also creates traditional wedding bread decorated in the most wonderful way.

An antiquated Monastery

4th Stop

An antiquated Monastery

Our next stop will be an antiquated monastery, St. George of Discouri, so as to embrace our religious customs. It is considered one of the oldest monasteries of Crete. The abbey of Discouri reminds us a small fortress, as it was built at the last period of the venetian domination; at that time an invasion of the Turkish army was likely to happen and the Venetians were building fortresses all around the island. At the monastery besides the central temple and the eminent picture of st. Georgios, the chambers of the nuns and the marvellously decorated guest house, the visitors can also visit the museum of the abbey and admire the heirlooms.

5th Stop

Cretan lunch and Greek coffee!

Afterwards, you will be guided to Drossia, to the most famous taverna of the area where you will have a delicious meal with pork, fried potatoes and salad (of course, vegetarian options are included!). Last but not least, you will have the chance to enjoy a traditional Greek coffee at an authentic and unique small village, Garazo. Historically, Garazo has always belonged to the province of Mylopotamos. The landscape, with the narrow built alleys and its marvellous architecture, is absolutely spectacular.
